Commercial CCTV Installation

Smart Wave IT designs and installs commercial CCTV for shops, bars and restaurants, offices, warehouses and yards, and for multi-site estates that need the same system in every building. City teams cover Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Preston, Blackpool, Chester and Crewe with same-day response, and rollouts go anywhere in the UK. Every system is Hikvision IP, cabled and configured by us, set up for secure remote viewing, and handed over with the GDPR signage, the retention policy and, where you hold a premises licence, the evidence that the conditions are met. Cameras are usually one part of a security package, so the alarm, the door entry and the network they all run on come from the same team on the same visit.

Who we install commercial CCTV for

Commercial CCTV splits into three jobs that need different kit: protecting a trading floor and the people on it, satisfying a licensing or insurance condition, and watching assets on a site that is empty at night. A lot of premises need two of the three, and the design has to say which cameras are doing which job.

The businesses we install CCTV for most often:

  • Bars, clubs and restaurants: entrances and exits at head height, bar and till points, the queue and the smoking area, built to the premises licence
  • Shops and retail chains: shopfront, tills, stockroom, fitting-room approaches, with the same layout repeated across branches
  • Offices and professional practices: reception, lift lobbies, comms room and the fire exits nobody watches
  • Warehouses, yards and trade counters: gate, perimeter, loading bays, fuel and plant storage, with ANPR on the entrance
  • Hotels and serviced accommodation: entrances, corridors and car parks, with retention set to the insurer's requirement
  • Multi-site estates: one camera standard, one recorder standard, one remote-viewing setup, so head office sees every site the same way

What a Smart Wave IT CCTV install includes

The quote is for a working system, not a box of cameras. Cabling, configuration, remote access and the paperwork are in it, and the price is fixed after a site walk.

  • A site survey at the time the risk is real, so the design reflects where the lighting is not
  • Hikvision IP cameras chosen per position: wide view, low-light, wide dynamic range on bright-inside dark-outside doors, ANPR on gates
  • An NVR sized for your retention period (31 days as standard) with a spare drive bay for growth
  • Cat6 cabling to every camera, run and tested by us, external-grade and fibre between buildings where needed
  • Secure remote viewing on phone and laptop, separate logins for managers and staff, alerts for motion where there should be none
  • GDPR signage, a written retention policy and a subject access process, handed over on the day
  • A named member of your staff trained to export footage with the time stamp intact, which is what the police actually ask for

How to choose commercial CCTV: IP, analogue or cloud cameras

The kit you are offered usually reflects what the installer likes selling rather than what the building needs. This is the comparison we go through before specifying, and it is why we recommend IP for almost every commercial site.

What commercial CCTV costs

Camera count and cable runs drive the price. A shop or bar is a short, predictable job; a yard with long runs, poles and ANPR is quoted from the survey because no two are alike.

  • Shop, cafe, bar or small office with 4 to 8 Hikvision IP cameras, an NVR with 30 days of storage, cabling and set-up: £1,200 to £3,500
  • Licensed premises sit toward the upper end because the door cameras have to be better, not just more numerous
  • Yards and perimeters: quoted on the survey; a small haulage yard with a gate ANPR camera sits above the range above
  • Multi-site estates: priced per site against a standard camera and recorder build, so the cost is predictable across the estate
  • Listed and heritage buildings cost more because routing takes longer and sometimes has to be internal
  • No monthly fee for storage or viewing; the system is yours

CCTV as part of a security package, and across many sites

On most premises the cameras arrive with an intruder alarm and door entry, and doing them on one visit avoids three separate disruptions to trading. We surveyed, installed and signed off an eight-camera Hikvision system with an Ajax alarm and Paxton access control in a single day for a retailer ahead of the Christmas trade; the detail is in our Chester boutique security case study. For estates, CCTV is one line in the standard build we repeat venue by venue, which is how the 80-site European rollout was delivered with one accountable team.

As a retail shop, our security systems are essential. Smart Wave's support for our CCTV and alarm systems has been outstanding. They responded quickly and communicated clearly about any issues. Thank you guys!

CCTV problems we get called in to fix

Much of our CCTV work is on systems someone else installed. These are the failures we see most, and most of them were decided at the design stage.

  • Footage requested by the police or a licensing officer and the entrance camera shows the top of a head: wrong height and angle for identification
  • Cameras that are fine by day and useless on a wet January evening: the wrong model for the light, chosen from a brochure
  • A recorder that only holds 9 days when the licence says 31: storage never sized for the retention period
  • Nobody on site knows how to export a clip with the time stamp intact: no one was trained at handover
  • No signage, no retention policy, no lawful basis written down: the GDPR half of the install was skipped
  • A yard system blinded by a trailer parked in the wrong place: camera positions chosen without walking the site in use
