From dropped video calls to enterprise Wi-Fi: a Manchester office overhaul

A 40-person office on a single SOHO router, swapped for six UniFi APs, a Cat6A backbone and proper VLANs.

The challenge

A growing professional services firm in central Manchester had outgrown the consumer-grade router that came with their broadband. Forty staff shared a single access point. Video conferences were dropping mid-call, file uploads were stalling, and guests on the same SSID were hammering the line. The directors had been quoted three weeks of disruption by another provider.

What we did

We did a full RF site survey across both floors and mapped out a six access point design covering every desk, the boardrooms and the break-out spaces. Cabling went in over a single weekend with structured Cat6A back to a new comms cabinet. We commissioned a UniFi controller, set up VLANs to separate staff, guest and IoT traffic, and tuned channel widths to play nicely with neighbouring tenants in the building. Staff came in on Monday to a network they did not have to think about.

The kit

  • 6 x Ubiquiti UniFi WiFi 6 access points
  • Ubiquiti UniFi 24-port PoE switch
  • Ubiquiti Dream Machine Pro gateway
  • Cat6A structured cabling (Fluke certified)
  • VLANs for staff, guest and IoT

The outcome

Video conference dropouts went away on day one. Internal speed tests jumped from single-digit Mbps in the far meeting room to consistent gigabit on the wired desks and 600+ Mbps on Wi-Fi across the floor. Guest traffic is now isolated and rate-limited, and the directors have a single dashboard they can glance at instead of guessing.

Our office Wi-Fi kept dropping out during important video conferences... Highly recommend Danny and Louis.
